Introduction
Bitvavo is the largest Dutch crypto exchange; Coinbase the best-known international brand, listed on NASDAQ. For Dutch users these are often the first two options — but they differ considerably in costs, oversight structure and product range. Reference date: July 2026.

Costs
For ordinary spot purchases Bitvavo is considerably cheaper: 0.10% maker / 0.25% taker (entry) versus 0.60–1.20% in the standard Coinbase environment. Coinbase Advanced narrows the gap but remains more expensive at the entry tier. Run your own numbers with the comparison tool — it uses your volume and official fee schedules.
Security and oversight
Here the picture flips. Coinbase holds MiFID II authorisation on top of MiCAR, is publicly listed (continuous reporting and audits) and has no history of lost client funds. Bitvavo publishes quarterly PoR attestations, but had Genesis exposure in 2022 that temporarily locked client funds; clients were fully compensated. Under our security pillar such a loss counts regardless of compensation — see the methodology.
Products
Bitvavo is spot-only. Coinbase additionally offers perpetual futures to EU users via its MiFID II entity. If you only buy and hold, this difference is irrelevant; if you ever want derivatives, Bitvavo simply cannot offer them.
The scores explained
Coinbase scores 6.8, Bitvavo 4.8. The gap comes almost entirely from the regulation pillar (MiFID II + listing) and security (the Genesis loss weighs heavily for Bitvavo). On costs, Bitvavo wins comfortably. The full point allocation is on the methodology page.
Who should pick which?
Bitvavo suits anyone buying spot in euros at low cost with a Dutch company under AFM supervision. Coinbase suits those wanting maximum institutional assurance (listing, MiFID II) or perpetuals, and who accept higher fees for it. Frequently asked questions
Is Bitvavo cheaper than Coinbase?
For spot purchases almost always: 0.10% maker / 0.25% taker (entry) versus 0.60–1.20% in Coinbase’s standard retail environment. Coinbase Advanced narrows the gap, but at the entry tier Bitvavo stays cheaper.
Is Coinbase safer than Bitvavo?
Coinbase has more oversight layers (MiCAR and MiFID II, plus a stock listing with audits) and no history of lost client funds. Bitvavo does publish quarterly PoR attestations, but the 2022 Genesis loss counts against our security pillar — even though clients were compensated.
Can I trade perpetuals on Bitvavo?
No, Bitvavo is spot-only. Perpetual futures require an exchange with a MiFID II licence, such as Coinbase, Kraken or Backpack — see the perpetuals comparison.
