Is your money on one of these platforms?

Do not wait for the final date. Reduce operational risk while withdrawals still work normally.

  1. 1

Close or reduce positions before reduce-only mode.

  2. 2

Withdraw to a wallet or licensed alternative you control.

  3. 3

Save transaction IDs, statements and confirmation emails.

  4. 4

Verify receipt on-chain or at the receiving platform.

The closures of 2026

AscendEX, BitMart and BitMEX illustrate three different wind-downs: regulatory failure, a commercial exit and the end of a derivatives pioneer.

AscendEX Closed

The MiCAR transition ended on 1 July 2026. Providers without CASP authorisation may no longer actively serve EU customers. Binance withdrew its Greek application; MEXC and HTX are not listed as authorised CASPs.

BitMEX Wind-down

A closure announcement is not the first warning. Withdrawal delays, shrinking reserves and unclear licence status usually become visible earlier.

Acquired — the platform remains, the owner changes

An acquisition is not a closure, but terms, fees and the contracting entity can change. Deribit went to Coinbase, Bitstamp and WonderFi to Robinhood, and NinjaTrader to Kraken.

The Dutch market: consolidation since 2023

The Netherlands moved early. LiteBit stopped, Anycoin Direct moved its licence route to Germany, and BLOX, BUX Crypto and SATOS customers moved into larger groups.

What these cases have in common

Four signals repeatedly appear before an exchange disappears or leaves a market.

The middle segment is squeezed

Platforms without a clear niche struggle when volume falls and compliance costs rise.

A licence is a cost as well as protection

Smaller providers must invest, sell or leave.

Withdrawal friction appears early

Delays are often the first public warning.

Reserves can be monitored

Proof of Reserves is not a guarantee, but its absence matters.

Collapsed, seized or bankrupt

An orderly wind-down gives customers time. FTX, Celsius, QuadrigaCX and Mt. Gox show the alternative: access stops first and recovery takes years.

Frequently asked questions

Will I get my money back if an exchange closes?

Usually during an orderly wind-down, provided you withdraw before the deadline. Insolvency offers no such certainty.

What changes after an acquisition?

The legal entity, supervisor, fees and terms can change even if the brand remains.

What does reduce-only mean?

You may only decrease or close existing positions; you cannot open or enlarge positions.

Does MiCAR prevent closures?

No. It improves custody, capital and communication rules, but licensed firms can still close.

How do I verify an EU licence?

Check the exact legal entity and service scope in the ESMA CASP register.

Is this page updated?
